Written Statement by President Jiang Zemin of the People's Republic of China at the Airport of Vientiane

12 November 2000

It gives me great honor and pleasure to pay a state visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic at the invitation of President of State Khamtay SIPHANDONE. I wish to take this opportunity to convey to the Lao people the sincere greetings and best wishes of the Chinese people.

China and Laos are linked by common mountains and rivers. The traditional friendship between the two peoples has withstood the trial of historical vicissitudes, demonstrating strong vitality and broad prospects for development. We are pleased to see that in recent years the good-neighborly and friendly relations between China and Laos have deepened in all fields and the two countries have maintained close high-level contacts. The exchanges and cooperation between us in the political, economic and trade, culture, education and health and other areas have yielded gratifying results. Facts have proven that to further consolidate and develop the friendly relations and cooperation between China and Laos not only serves the fundamental interests of our two peoples but also peace and stability of the region.

At the turn of the century, the Sino-Lao relations are taking on an unprecedentedly good momentum of development. During my visit, I will exchange views with the Lao leaders on our bilateral relations and issues of shared interest and learn about Laos' development in the economic, social and other fields. I am sure with the thoughtful arrangement of the Lao side, the visit will be a complete success.

May the Lao People's Democratic Republic enjoy prosperity and its people well-being.
